Epilogue
âSheriff says youâve had some bad luck,â Darla told Judah once theyâd taken out the stitches a few weeks later. âHe says you shouldnât get in the way of flying boards like that. The storm really kicked up some things.â
Shingles had been ripped off the roofs of some houses. Fences had blown down. One of their cows had mysteriously moved onto Bodeâs property. Heâd returned it promptly.
âDonât want you calling me a cattle thief,â heâd said, and Fiona had humphed at him.
Judah was glad it was just a board that had hit him, and not one of his brothers, his aunt or his wife. âThere are worse things to be in the way of, I guess. Are you packed, wife? Itty bitty bikini and everything?â
Darla laughed. âThere will be no bikini. Just a one-piece.â
âOne-pieces are great. Lots of leg.â He rubbed his hands together.
âDid you bring your swimsuit?â Darla asked. âI want to see hunk for the whole week.â
He puffed out his chest. âIâm your hunk, darling.â
Darla laughed. âShall we go say goodbye to the girls?â
Judahâs face fell. âIâm not sure if I can. Iâll miss them too much.â
It was true. They were up with him at the crack of dawn when he ate breakfast. Heâd make bottles for them, since heâd talked Darla into changing to bottles a bit before their trip. The girls had grown by leaps and bounds. They might have started out slow, but the pediatrician said they were catching up quickly on the growth chart. He said it was amazing. Judah thought it was his wife who was amazing.
Even he was flourishing, living with her.
âWhen we get this lawsuit settled,â he told Darla, âI have a surprise for you.â
âTell me now, just in case,â she said, and he grinned at her. âNah. I like making you beg. Itâs so much fun.â
She swiped at him. âI thought you didnât like surprises.â
He swept her into his lap while they waited for Rafe to drive them to the airport. âWell, once I realized surprise was your game, I decided to turn the tables on you.â
Darla smiled. âSo tell me.â
âIâm going to build you your own house.â
His wife stared at him for a moment. âHere, at the ranch?â
He nodded. âI donât want to get your hopes up, in case we do lose the ranch.â
She kissed him. âI love the bunkhouse, but thank you for thinking of such a wonderful gift. I love you, Judah Callahan.â
âI know, Mrs. Callahan. I feel it every day.â
âAnd you know something else?â she said, wrapping her arms around him so she could pull him close, to tell him something sheâd long been wanting to tell him, for his ears only. âI had a dream about you last night.â
He perked up. âYou did? Did it involve naked you and whipped cream and maybe even some cherries?â
She kissed him on the lips. âEven better,â she said. âI think weâre pregnant.â
His jaw dropped.
âSurprise,â she said.
Judah laughed and pulled her into his arms, the luckiest, happiest man alive.
